

It turns out they did not meet six months later. That is essentially the plot of "Before Sunrise." Nearly a decade later, Jesse is married with a son and on a book tour in Europe. They agree to meet again at the train station in six months. The challenge is to let the audience know that without it becoming an exposition thing."įor those who haven't seen the previous films, the nutshell: An American (Ethan Hawke) and a French woman (Julie Delpy) meet on a train and connect on an evening together in Vienna. I think it's a powerful depiction of time, seeing the ways they've changed. You can explain a lot in subtle ways, unlike other art forms where you have to explain it all by writing it out. "The films are about who they are at that moment, but you also get what's gone on in the interim," he says. Linklater frequently has set films in short periods of time, or made films with a deadline as narrative device. The statement could apply to much of his work. "It's all about time, really," Linklater says. There's nothing like these films in cinema and few comparisons in literature. But more important, he's infused them with the 18 years in between.

The Houston native estimates he's presented about 30 hours in the lives of two characters named Jesse and Celine, condensing them into 300 minutes. He's created a narrative through cinema that is fluid and organic and free, rather than pinned to a time and place. Still, Linklater has accomplished something unique with these three films. And thoughtful and conversational isn't exactly the recipe for a summer blockbuster. "Before Midnight" may do better than the other two films. combined, so they fall into the category of labors of love, yet these labors are untainted by finance and outside forces. The first two grossed about $10 million in the U.S. To call Linklater's "Before" films - which started with "Before Sunrise" in 1995 and continued in 2004 with "Before Sunset" - a trilogy does them a disservice, putting them in the category of cinema based on androids and asteroids, flames and flipping cars. If that seems like a mouthful, well, so are the three films, all of which are largely based on long conversations between two characters. With the release of "Before Midnight" on Friday, filmmaker Richard Linklater has created an accidental epic of understated proportions that says something profound about the concepts of love and connection across time.
